In letters, important information is often shared. However, they are frequently written in a complicated way, making it difficult to understand what is being communicated and what actions need to be taken. This issue affects not only the 2.5 million people in the Netherlands who struggle with literacy but also 30% of Dutch citizens who find government letters too difficult to comprehend.
Making Digital Letters Understandable
Lees Simpel is an app that helps people read complex letters using artificial intelligence (AI). Users can take a photo of their letter, and the app provides a summary in simple, understandable language.
As more organizations shift to sending letters exclusively in digital formats, Stichting Lees Simpel now aims to make digital mail readable and comprehensible for everyone. They are exploring options for improving the accessibility, usability, and discoverability of digital correspondence in collaboration with their target audience.
This project is part of the call ‘Participation in the Digital Society’. Through this call, we invited proposals for projects aimed at improving the skills of people who struggle to fully participate in the digital society.
